This position performs general railroad maintenance requiring practical skill and knowledge (but not proficiency) in various trades; responsible for assisting in preventive maintenance, inspection, track right of way components, Diagnosing and repair rails, tracks, special track work, direct fixation track work, and/or any other related rail services. Also, must learn about track inspections as per railroad requirements and must be in compliance. Applicant must have the ability to prioritize and multi-task while working in a team environment. Knowledge of track and/or signal maintenance desirable. Willingness to work flexible hours and to assist as required in all aspects of the job assisting Railroad Inspector with daily duties. Employees will be required to have a Class A CDL and be able to work all hours as necessary.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: On a continuous basis, sit, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl and twist for varying periods in the course of work; use hands and fingers to grasp tools; make repetitive hand and body motions; twist and reach below and above shoulder; lift or carry objects weighing up to 75 pounds;Position entails shift work, and to be on call to work non-traditional shifts, in all conditions, any time, including weekends & holidays. Applicant will perform a variety of duties including installation of rails, ties switches, and other track materials, maintenance and repair, use of equipment and tools, and other duties as assigned. Positions requires frequent walking on uneven surfaces; standing extended periods of time; lift/carry and push/pull equipment and other objects weighing up to 75 lbs.; bending, stooping and or kneeling. to communicate with co-workers using a two-way radio; use telephone, and write or use a keyboard to communicate through written means; see in the normal vision range with or without correction to read computer screen, blueprints; hear in the normal range with or without correction.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors environments. Some work is performed with exposure to low to loud noise level; frequent fieldwork is required with exposure to a variety of weather conditions and the external environment; tasks may require working in tightly enclosed spaces and the use of ladders or other safety equipment to gain access to hard to reach locations; some work is performed in underground electrical vaults, and in excavation sites. Some work may require exposure to dust, particulates, unpleasant and potentially hazardous substances and high voltage.
