Responsibilities

This Opportunity

We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join our Ballistic Missile Radiation Hardening Team in Colorado Springs, CO.

This position will provide you the opportunity to join a group of about 10 scientists and engineers supporting the US Navy's submarine launched ballistic missile (SLBM) radiation hardening effort. You will work with the team to assess the effects of nuclear weapon environments on aerospace materials and missile components. You will be learning current techniques and using modern software tools in performing your duties as a member of our multidisciplinary team.

Your Impact

The successful candidate will perform a wide range of tasks spanning computer-aided design of mechanical systems, radiation induced thermomechanical shock and system structural response, gas gun impact dynamics and stress wave phenomenology research leading to fracture and deformation of materials. You will correlate computational models with experimental data collected at our Patriot Gas Gun facility and other nuclear weapons effects testing facilities. You will develop and present mechanical hardening and vulnerability system assessments. The position will require the use of scientific and engineering software, in particular Abaqus, FEA, and PUFF Lagrangian hydrodynamics, as well as data processing software (e.g., Python, MATLAB). You will have the opportunity to work with technical staff from organizations across the U.S. nuclear weapons complex.

In this position you will be responsible for the following:

    Work under the direction of senior technical staff to perform mechanical hardening and vulnerability analysis.
  • Work under the direction of senior technical staff to develop configuration managed mechanical nuclear weapon effects software tools.
  • Coordinate with team members on large scale multi-physics and engineering simulations.
  • Use experimental data to mature material property equation of state and constitutive libraries.
  • Write and review technical documents.
  • Develop and present technical briefings to the Navy customer and other industry organizations.
  • Participate in technical discussions with the Arcfield team as well as representatives from other industry organizations and the Navy customer.
  • Support the team in any way needed for the team to deliver its work on-time and at a high technical level.

Qualifications

Required

  • BS 2-4 years, MS 0-2.
  • Computer-aided design software experience (SolidWorks or equivalent).
  • Experience with static and dynamic structural analysis.
  • Experience with software such as C++, Fortran, Python, and MATLAB.
  • Possess strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to work both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Willingness to travel periodically.
  • Must BE ABLE TO OBTAIN and maintain a Top Secret/Q clearance.

Preferred

  • Experience with radiation induced shock hydrodynamics and stress wave modeling.
  • Experience with shock hydrodynamic experimental diagnostics such as photonic displacement interferometry, calorimeters, and linear velocity transducers.
  • Experience with nuclear weapon environments and effects on systems.

This is the projected compensation range for this position. There are differentiating factors that can impact a final salary/hourly rate, including, but not limited to, Contract Wage Determination, relevant work experience, skills and competencies that align to the specified role, geographic location (For Remote Opportunities), education and certifications as well as Federal Government Contract Labor categories.
